Direct answer
Similar kit price? Buy Atom 2.
If complete kits cost roughly the same, Atom 2 gives you substantially more creative features. Mini 4K makes the most sense when clearly cheaper.
- Buy Potensic Atom 2: For AI Track, HDR, P-Log and dedicated vertical recording.
- Buy DJI Mini 4K: Save on manual daylight filming and put the difference toward batteries or trips.
At a glance
The features that change your footage
| What matters | DJI Mini 4K | Potensic Atom 2 |

| Maximum video | 4K/30fps | 4K/30fps HDR |
| High-resolution photo mode | 12 MP | 48 MP JPEG; RAW uses lower-resolution mode |
| Subject tracking | QuickShots, not continuous subject tracking | AI Track: Spotlight, Follow and Parallel |
| Obstacle sensing | Downward positioning; no forward obstacle avoidance | Downward positioning; no obstacle avoidance |
| Vertical video | Landscape capture; crop for portrait output | Dedicated 9:16 recording mode; camera does not physically rotate |
| Aircraft storage | None; use a microSD card | None in the aircraft; use microSD |
| Transmission | DJI O2 | PixSync 4.0 |
| Claimed maximum flight time | 31 min | 32 min |
| Takeoff weight, original configuration | 246 g | <249 g |
| Controller options | DJI RC-N1C | PT1 standard phone controller; optional PTD1 screen-controller packages |
Flight times are controlled manufacturer maximums, not usable filming time. The one-minute difference is a weak reason to choose either. Weight figures use original batteries and accessories; check your actual configuration.
Biggest difference
Atom 2 can follow a moving subject and gives you more recording options. Mini 4K is a straightforward manual camera drone. If you will use tracking and the kit prices are close, buy Atom 2; if a DJI kit leaves a useful saving for batteries and trips, Mini 4K remains a good first purchase.

Camera decision
Atom 2 gives you more ways to finish a clip
Both use a three-axis mechanical gimbal for stabilized video. Atom 2 combines a slightly larger sensor with HDR, P-Log and more shooting modes, making it the more flexible camera package. Mini 4K covers straightforward daylight landscapes, reveals and travel clips.
Digital Camera World's Mini 4K test found the flying experience predictable and DJI Fly responsive on the reviewer's phone. It also highlighted the small camera's limits in low light and contrasty scenes. Choose Mini 4K for a clear, simple filming job and a lower kit total, rather than expecting premium night footage.
TechRadar's Atom 2 camera test praised its video but found weaker photo detail toward the edges and inconsistent automatic white balance. Atom 2 offers more camera tools; exposure and capture mode still decide how much of that potential reaches the finished clip.
HDR for quick edits, P-Log for grading
Use Atom 2's HDR mode when you want a ready-to-use recording look. Use P-Log when you intend to grade the footage. Potensic added P-Log in its September 2025 V020 release; reviews written at launch may still call it forthcoming. Update the aircraft, controller and Potensic Eve app before relying on it.
48 MP does not mean 48 MP RAW or 8K video
Atom 2's high-resolution still mode produces JPEGs. Its RAW mode uses the lower-resolution capture; Mini 4K also offers RAW stills. Pick the larger JPEG for a ready-made high-resolution photo, or RAW when editing flexibility matters. The Atom 2's “8K” marketing describes still photos, not video recording.
For social posts, Atom 2 offers a dedicated vertical recording mode: frame and record 9:16 video directly in the app. Mini 4K needs a portrait crop during editing. Neither camera physically rotates for portrait capture. If a rotating portrait camera is a priority, compare the options in our mini-drone buying guide.
Flight and filming
Buy Atom 2 when you want to be in the shot
Atom 2's Follow mode travels with a moving subject; Parallel is useful for a side-on moving clip; Spotlight keeps a moving subject framed from a hovering position. These are meaningful advantages for a creator filming an open-space walk or a travel sequence.
Tom's Guide's month-long test praised the tracking and singled out Parallel as particularly useful. Its reviewer also noted sensitivity to strong gusts, so start in calm conditions.
Mini 4K's QuickShots automate short preset movements; they are not continuous Follow tracking. For a stationary landscape or a manually controlled reveal, that simpler toolset can be enough. Both give you normal controller-based flying, so Atom 2's additional modes do not stop you learning the sticks.
Neither drone has obstacle avoidance. Track in open space with a clear path beside and behind the aircraft, keep it in sight and check the return route. Our Return to Home guide covers the setup.
Atom 2 also gained waypoint flight in December 2025, adding planned route control. An old review's missing-waypoints verdict is no longer a current feature comparison.
The buying decision
Compare the bag you will actually carry
Choose Mini 4K when…
- A complete, healthy kit leaves a substantial saving.
- Your first goal is manual daylight filming.
- You prefer using DJI Fly and your phone works with it.
- You would spend the difference on batteries or trips.
Choose Atom 2 when…
- Equivalent full kits cost about the same.
- You want Follow or Parallel subject tracking.
- HDR, P-Log or dedicated vertical recording will get used.
- You want the option to budget for a PTD1 screen controller.
Compare one-battery kits with one-battery kits, or three-battery packages with three-battery packages. Count the controller, healthy batteries, charging equipment, card, bag, shipping and tax. A cheap aircraft-only listing is a different purchase.
The Mini 4K's RC-N1C and Atom 2's standard PT1 both use your phone. PTD1 is an optional Atom 2 screen controller; do not assume it is included in the lowest-priced package. Confirm the app and phone fit before paying. Both aircraft need a microSD card: the PTD1's storage belongs to the controller.
Official US availability varies. Check selected-kit stock and regional support, then compare current seller offers using the complete-package links above.
For used stock, inspect gimbal operation, battery health, included parts, activation readiness and written returns. DJI's after-sales policy links service to the purchase region. Potensic's warranty policy also has seller and condition requirements. Confirm who handles repairs for the exact listing.
Their original configurations sit below the FAA's recreational registration threshold, but accessories can change flying weight. Under FAA guidance, the under-250 g exception applies to recreational operations; Part 107 drones must be registered. See our US registration guide for the operating category you plan to use.
Already own Mini 4K?
Switch for the shots, not the label
Keep a working Mini 4K if you enjoy manual travel filming and its footage meets your needs. Switch to Atom 2 when continuous subject tracking or its extra recording modes are the reason you keep missing a wanted shot.
Write down your next three planned clips. If they are landscapes and manually flown reveals, spend on practice and useful kit parts. If they need you moving in-frame while the drone follows, Atom 2's tracking is a concrete reason to change systems. Budget for the replacement controller and charging setup; the two brands' kits do not interchange.
Common questions
Before choosing your first kit
Is Potensic Atom 2 better than DJI Mini 4K?
It is our stronger feature-value choice when equivalent complete kits cost about the same. Tracking, HDR and P-Log give you more shooting options. Mini 4K makes sense when it is meaningfully cheaper and manual daylight filming is your priority.
Does DJI Mini 4K have Follow Me?
It has QuickShots for preset camera movements, but not continuous subject-following tracking. Atom 2 adds Follow, Parallel and Spotlight.
Does either drone have obstacle avoidance?
No. Downward positioning helps hovering and landing; it does not detect and route around trees in your flight path. Use tracking and Return to Home only with a checked, clear route.
Does Atom 2 now support P-Log?
Yes. Potensic added it in the September 2025 V020 firmware release. Update the aircraft, controller and Eve app; launch reviews describing it as a future feature predate that addition.
Does Atom 2 record 8K video or 48 MP RAW?
No. Its 8K label describes high-resolution JPEG stills. Its maximum video mode is shown in the shared table, while RAW capture uses the lower-resolution still mode.
Which is better for vertical video?
Atom 2 is more convenient because it offers a dedicated vertical recording mode for 9:16 video. Mini 4K needs a portrait crop in editing. Neither camera physically rotates.
Is Potensic Atom 2 worth the extra money over DJI Mini 4K?
Yes, when the premium buys features you will use: subject tracking, HDR, P-Log and dedicated vertical recording. Compare equivalent complete kits. If Mini 4K is clearly cheaper and you mainly want manual daylight footage, keep the saving for batteries or trips.
Can you fly Atom 2 without using your phone as a screen?
With the optional compatible PTD1 screen controller. Standard PT1 packages need your phone, as does Mini 4K's RC-N1C. Compare the actual controller included in the price.
Which has longer battery life?
The manufacturer maximums are too close to drive this purchase. Battery count, wind and a return reserve matter more to a filming session than the one-minute advertised difference.
