The short version
More tools in your first camera kit
Atom 2 is a compelling first camera drone when you want subject tracking, HDR video and room to experiment with color grading. Choose the standard phone-controller kit for value; spend on the three-battery package if longer shooting sessions matter more than a built-in controller screen.
The useful version
Buy it for tracking and video
Where the extra features pay off
- AI Track adds Follow, Parallel and Spotlight for moving-subject clips that a manual-only entry kit cannot automate.
- A stabilized camera, HDR recording, dedicated vertical recording and firmware-added P-Log provide several useful ways to build a finished video.
The limits to plan around
- There is no obstacle avoidance. Tracking needs open space and active supervision, especially when moving sideways or backward.
- High-resolution photos are JPEG; RAW capture uses the lower-resolution mode. Dedicated 9:16 video recording is available, but the camera does not physically rotate.
What independent flights tell us
Tom’s Guide’s month-long Atom 2 test praised its smooth video and subject tracking, particularly Parallel mode, while noting susceptibility to strong gusts. That makes calm, open locations a good starting point for a new pilot.
Digital Camera World’s review also praised tracking and stabilized video, but reported earlier-than-expected range alerts and gimbal warnings during its test. Inspect the aircraft at startup and treat app warnings as a reason to check the setup before continuing.
Both reviews tested earlier firmware. Their practical observations help explain the product; their old missing-feature lists do not describe every feature available today.
Camera output: choose the mode you need
Atom 2 gives you more ways to produce a clip than the simpler Mini 4K. HDR is useful when you want a finished look without a grading session. P-Log is the option for a deliberate color workflow; it needs grading to become the final image. Potensic added it in firmware V020, so launch reviews calling it forthcoming are out of date on that point.
The 8K label refers to high-resolution still photographs. Video tops out at the resolution in the shared specification record above. High-resolution JPEG and lower-resolution RAW serve different purposes: JPEG gives you a larger ready-made file; RAW gives you more editing flexibility. Choose by output, not by the biggest number on the box.
TechRadar’s camera test found better results toward the center than the edges and noted automatic white-balance inconsistency. Its low-light assessment was also less enthusiastic than the manufacturer’s AI Night marketing. Atom 2 is more convincing as a daylight travel-video purchase than as a substitute for a larger night camera.
Atom 2 offers a dedicated vertical recording mode for 9:16 video. Frame for portrait output directly in the app and keep room around a moving subject. The camera does not physically rotate.
Tracking is the reason to choose this kit
Follow moves with the subject; Parallel gives you a side-on moving view; Spotlight keeps a moving subject framed from a hovering position. These are useful differences for someone who wants to be in a travel clip rather than operate every movement manually.
Potensic’s AI guidance explicitly says the aircraft lacks obstacle avoidance. Inspect the whole route, including space behind and beside the aircraft, and keep it in sight. A clear path matters more than a confident-looking subject box on the screen.
Potensic also added waypoint flight in December 2025. Update the aircraft, controller and Eve app together before planning a shot around firmware-added features. That release date identifies an addition, not the latest firmware version today.
Spend on the parts you will use
Start with a phone-controller kit if your phone fits the controller and runs Potensic Eve. A three-battery package is worth comparing for trips with several launch locations. Count healthy batteries, charging equipment, storage and the bag in both offers. Optional PTD1 screen-controller packages solve a different need and should have a separate budget.
The aircraft needs removable storage. PTD1’s internal storage is controller storage, not a reserve inside the aircraft. Pack a suitable microSD card before leaving home.
Potensic requires internet activation before the first flight. Set up the app, activation and firmware at home, then practice hovering and Return to Home in open space. Our Mini 4K vs Atom 2 comparison explains which complete kit is the better buy for your first sessions.
The manufacturer’s takeoff-weight bound describes its original configuration. Check actual flying weight and US registration rules: recreational and Part 107 operations have different registration requirements.
The decision
A strong feature purchase at a matching kit price
Buy Atom 2 for the shots its tracking and camera modes help you make. When its complete-kit price is close to Mini 4K, the extra tools make it our stronger feature-value choice. A cheaper Mini 4K remains attractive for learning manual daylight filming.
