The aircraft moves relative to its own nose.
When the nose points away from you, the aircraft’s left and right usually match what you see. When the nose points toward you, its left appears on your right. That reversal is one of the first sources of confusion.
Begin with the nose facing away and keep it there while you learn pitch and roll. If orientation becomes unclear, stop adding inputs. If the aircraft supports reliable position hold, let it stabilize while you identify the nose. Continue only after orientation is clear; otherwise, use the model-specific safe landing or recovery procedure from the manual. Add the separate nose-in orientation drill only after tail-in control feels predictable.
04 / PREFLIGHT
Run a practical preflight.

Hover and land

Stop when: position or orientation stops feeling controlled.
Move and pause

Stop when: your corrections start getting larger instead of smaller.
Fly a simple box
Goal: stop at each corner while keeping the nose pointed away.

07 / STOP RULES
Landing early is a useful skill.
Decide what will end the session before takeoff. Land or use the model-specific safe response when:
- orientation is unclear;
- the aircraft or controller reports a warning;
- wind, visibility, or precipitation changes;
- people or animals enter the practice area;
- the control link becomes unreliable;
- battery margin is no longer comfortable;
- you become rushed, distracted, or fatigued.
No single emergency procedure applies to every quadcopter. Learn the model’s loss-of-link behavior, low-battery response, and Return to Home logic before relying on automation.
08 / COMMON ERRORS
Avoid complexity during the first sessions.
Fixating on the screen. Brief checks can be useful, but keep the aircraft in sight and stay aware of the surrounding area.
Using large stick inputs. Large corrections can create the next error before you understand the first one.
Practicing close to obstacles. More open space gives you time to stop, identify orientation, and land.
Turning the nose toward you too early. Learn predictable movement with the nose away before practicing with the nose facing you, when the controls can feel reversed.
Trusting automation without reading the manual. Obstacle sensing, positioning, and return-to-home have limits and may not be available on every aircraft.
Continuing after the objective is complete. End on a controlled landing rather than adding one unplanned maneuver.
09 / POST-FLIGHT
Finish the flight as deliberately as it began.
Land at the planned point and stop the motors according to the manual. Power down in the manufacturer-recommended order. Inspect the aircraft for damage, unusual heat, loose parts, or damage to the propellers. Let batteries cool and follow the model-specific storage instructions.
Record one thing that felt predictable and one skill to repeat. The next flight does not need a new trick. Repeating the same calm sequence is how the controls start to feel familiar.
